Purge 1×08 thoughts including spoilers:

Well! We kinda knew that was coming. A part of me is shrugging, given what the genre is, bolstered by another part that can see that yes, one out of two f/f characters was killed, but there’s probably a similar ratio for m/f characters for once.

But a final part of me is a little miffed at how it happened? It wasn’t good TV. Like, we didn’t see the signs before, it all happened in one episode. The line from Lila before about Rick wanting to be a part of the world, we picked up on that but it was hardly foreshadowing enough. Not when it was kinda true. Surprise, Lila’s a purge loving psycho lesbian trope after all! I would have included more scenes of her with her parents earlier in the show, or even the flashback from tonight, I would have included the first half in a previous ep and then showed the rest of it today to get some payoff and a persistant moment. They deliberately played up the romantic arc of Lila and Jenna in previous eps so this could be a more shocking and horrible twist. That Jenna, the most anti-purge person on the show, had to kill the woman that she might have loved.

And it hasn’t escaped my notice that most of the bad guys have been just terrible people, motivated by money and being men, lol. Jane’s bad guy was David, the siblings’ was Tavis and the ex-boyfriend and the general shittiness of humans, but the Betancourts’ wasn’t actually the NFFA but Jenna’s jilted female lover? Who was a mixture of evil (enjoying her first purge in flashbacks and everything she was throwing at Rick) but mostly genuinely unbalanced?

But at least that all is done now and we can stop worrying how it was all going to shake down. 😛

I think The Purge only ends 1 of 2 ways for our 3some. Either Jenna dies and Rick and Lila have to deal, or Rick and Lila die and Jenna’s left alone. On the flip side, I could see just Lila dying as methinks she had all this planned (party shooting + we happens in 1×08-1×11) to get Jenna to herself so that they can go save the world on her dad’s money without Rick. Dad and Mom dead = lots of money. Get into R&Js house to get Rick killed = Jenna to herself.

Sorry, forgot to reply earlier, but yeah, I don’t see any kind of straightforward “happy” ending. I think the show definitely wants to punish shitty people, hence the NFFA massacre and David, and if Lila has been manipulating people and using the purge to enact her own plans, she won’t get away with it.

So from the promo and the stills I think Lila had something to do with the attack at her parents house, she seemed pretty close with Catalina so there’s no reason she would imply that Lila wasn’t safe when Jenna asked to spare her. The thing I fear is that Rick is right and Lila is plotting against them or maybe against Rick but then Jenna wouldn’t forgive her. I don’t think she’s clean in this but I hope it isn’t something “unforgivable”.

Yeah, there’s definitely a twist or two coming, them riding out the rest of the purge safely in the house is definitely not how the last few eps will go. The promo had Rick tied up outside so we don’t know what leads to that, but I do hope that whatever twist of evil Lila we get, it’s followed by a twist of eviler Rick, lol.

what’s your theory about the purge and the whole jenna/lila/rick triangle after episode 7? there’s still one episode left, so we can assume that something else is going to happen with them. do you think one of them dies? xxx

Heh, I anticipated your question this week and was already thinking on this question after I watched!

First, aren’t there three more episodes?

Second, it’s becoming less about the shipping for me now (maybe it always should have been) because it’s all being framed for Rick now. It’s no longer about just Lila and Jenna, every time we get anything between them, it pans over to Rick to see his reaction. And lol, he is in a tough spot. Was a bit of a dick move to try to stop Jenna from opening the gate to let Lila in but since then, he’s mooostly been okay with her. I’m not yet sure that Lila is telling the truth about what happened, but if she is, then that all does suck for her.

Jenna is the weirdest here, because…does she really not see what’s brewing? I guess she thinks it’s just the one night, ride it out, Lila’s hurt and traumatized, there’s no way anything could happen tonight, let’s see where things are tomorrow. But they’re both so in love with her, every time she tends to one the other gets so on edge.

I saw the preview for next week, and I think, sadly, it’s Lila who’s going to do something shady. I do think one or two will die, it seems like Jenna will survive with one or the other. She could be the one who dies, but I think her, Jane, and at least one of the siblings–possibly in a sick twist Penelope will be the one who lives after Miguel sacrifices himself for her–will be the survivors. The same twist theory could apply to Jenna, where Rick and Lila live and she doesn’t, it depends on what “lesson” the writers want to teach. Is it going to be humanity triumphing or deliberately bleak as if to say, this is where we’re headed, stop before it’s too late. We’ve had Jane kill now, despite her attitude toward the purge, I wonder if Jenna will too at some point. Possibly even…one of Rick or Lila?? No…right? Hmm.
