I wasn’t expecting lovecraft country to stumble the way it did the last few mins of this ep. Everything about the intro of the two-spirit character to the last scene felt so disrespectful… I’m hoping they fix it next ep, or at least acknowledge how they visited the same genocidal colonizing violence the white ppl did, but even if they ~teach a lesson~ or whatever it’s really shitty they used indigenous/two-spirit ppl like that.

Yeah, I was shocked, since so much of this show is explicitly about awareness of this kind of thing. Even if it was deliberate to show that Black people can be on both sides of colonizer violence and even if that’s actually acknowledged on screen instead of them focusing on the plot, the end result is still this person violently killed and then no longer on the show. I make a big deal about representation coming from actually being visible and in front of us because otherwise, it’s inevitable that no matter how much sympathy we had in this ep, by next week and then onward, we’ll have moved on. It is simply how this works. It won’t even be like George, who lives on by people still remembering and mentioning him, who will mourn Yahima?

And my other concern was like, the focus on the genitals. Honestly, I haven’t even been fully comfortable with the nudity level for Tic, I’m sure they have their reasons and the actors are comfortable with it and maybe it’s like, to take control or make it more matter of fact and less salacious, but it just feels like if certain people are oversexualized by so much of society still, is it really worth showing these kinds of shots? I know it’s HBO and they show women all the time but that’s kind of my point, I don’t love that either.

Maybe they will reverse it, even if the actor only has this one IMDB entry for the show, that could be to avoid spoilers. But…I don’t have lots of faith in that. And we will move on.

how are you liking Away? i watched the trailer and thought that it looked like a sappy melodrama aimed at suburban moms like a jodi picoult novel

Oh, lol, hmm, I didn’t watch the trailer so I came in mostly just knowing it was an astronaut show and immediately associating it with For All Mankind, which is definitely a character drama but also filled with a surprising amount of science and astronaut action.

This show is less that than I’d expected, especially after a pretty tense sequence in space in ep 2, that seemed to have been the exception from a more schmaltzy family and character based drama, which I don’t always love, but it’s what gave us ep 3, so I can’t complain. I do like things like how each of the astronauts represents an existing or rising space nation, their different roles, the friction between them, and I love both the female astronauts a lot.

hello. the new mulan was released today and seeing your gifset brings back childhood memories. i didn’t/don’t follow what’s happened with the actress who plays the new mulan but wasn’t there some controversy with her supporting china over hong kong protesters? (i saw your tags)

Yeah, there was, she posted support for the Hong Kong police while they were busy assaulting protesters.

I’ve seen different stances, “maybe she was forced to voice that support” vs “doesn’t seem like she was and it’s still her choice to listen” vs “even if you don’t want to support her, support for this shows a market for Asian movies”, it’s up to people to make whatever choice they think is right. For the record, it was available to pirate pretty quickly.

What is lovecraft country about?

It’s a scifi show, set in the US in the ‘50s and since it mostly focuses on a set of Black characters, there’s a whole lot of racism they deal with amid the scifi. It’s based on a set of connected short stories so while it’s the same characters and it’s all the same continuity, each episode starts and finishes its own complete and very packed arc.

Sorry of you’ve already discussed this but at the end when dana(?) is about to say The Thing do you think blair guessed what she was going to say? It seemed like she grabbed her hand and said no? I might be misremembering lol but it stuck out as i was watching it

I did briefly mention it earlier but yeah, she did seem to guess! I don’t know what it was about how Dana and Debbie looked over but she did seem to sense something life-wrecking was about to happen. Maybe she expected just something horrible, but that…oof.

Someone asked you how S&B could communicate telepathically if they’re not twins or siblings but if you shearch a little bit on the internet you would find out that twins that have kids, their childs share the same DNA or almost the same, so that makes them siblings or half-siblings even though in reality they’re knows as cousins. S&B also grow up beliving they’re twins so that’s help them to be even more conected with each either. Basically they have that telepathy cause they really are siblings

That is a very cool bit of info but is even being technically siblings enough for a twin bond? It might just be the closeness, so I’m actually afraid that it might disappear next season, now that they feel so separated, and then maybe comes back at some pivotal point. I’d actually much prefer it just stays throughout and gives them at least that solace.
