Anything new?

In terms of f/f content? I guess if we’re speaking about new f/f that I haven’t posted much about, there’s (varying levels of spoilers for all):

  • Betty on HBO – Four eps in, kind of a laid back look at female street skateboarders, at least two of the main cast, Kirt and Honeybear, are wlw, with side character love interests each
  • Hightown on Starz – Two eps in, lesbian lead Jackie Quinones, gonna be compared to Stumptown a lot, for obvious reasons, but the tone is much grittier
  • Alles was Zaht, a long-running German soap – This storyline having started building since March, Ina’s already out, Chiara’s image-conscious and going through a coming out arc
  • Skam France – Five eps in, I guess, I don’t know much about this, but you know how it goes with Skam, a character focus per season, this season’s main is Lola and I guess she’s having a time of it, from what it looks like, lol, the love interest being Maya
  • Homecoming on Amazon Prime – The second season dropped on Thursday, it’s not an anthology series but the first season’s lead was Julia Roberts and it switches to focus on an entirely new character played by Janelle Monae in the second, and while it would spoil a lot to reveal even the premise of the show I will say that Janalle Monae’s character is involved with a woman and Hong Chau, Lady Trieu in HBO’s Watchmen, is in both seasons. It’s not necessarily a happy ending, nor are the characters even particularly rootable, but I chose to take it as optimistic.
  • Defending Jacob on Apple+ – Seven eps in, one of the side characters, the lawyer for the suspect, is played by Cherry Jones, lesbian in real life (and Sarah Paulson’s ex), also married to a lady in the show, though we just get a mention of it, but I just thought it was nice 😮
  • Control Z on Netflix – A LOT of spoilers on this one, lol: The first season dropped on Friday, a goddamn mess of a show, one of those Gossip Girl/Elite type high school dramas, where students keep getting their secrets revealed to the rest of the school, but one of the first and biggest secrets is revealing a popular girl is trans, and that’s just…mean. To place that on the same level as affairs and drugs and whatever. Maybe the actress, also trans, found it cathartic, obviously no judgment on her AT ALL, not like the roles out there are plenty, but it just feels cruel to put that kind of bullying on a character when it’s sensationalized and there’s so little to balance it out there. And she does seem to have a triumphant arc, so there’s that. Anyway, there’s an out lesbian, Alex, with her own secret (she’s having an affair with a teacher, yeah, like I said, that kind of show).
  • Snowpiercer on TNT – Two eps in, plain reboot of the movie, two of the characters introduced in the first ep, Bess and Jinju, haven’t interacted onscreen yet  (that I’ve noticed) were making out in the trailer, lol.
  • Run on HBO – First season finished yesterday, I guess, also not watching this, but PWB shows up in the last three eps of the season according to IMDB, with her love interest played by Tamara Podemski (who also plays a wlw on Coroner, so yay)

Donyou happen to know if mr robot has wlw content or it is just gay tension between women haha

What a coincidence, I’m actually reading fic from that show right now. 

It definitely has wlw content, but ignore the random f/f kiss in the first season between two at-the-time-central characters. It’s actually what made me sideeye the show a bit, but something does develop in later seasons between two totally different characters, messily, but I personally liked how they spent time repairing it in the final season and they were given an open end but pretty hopeful, I’d say, for this show/genre.

I’m watching Hightown and I really like the MC. I love a fucked up woman, especially one who’s kind of a jerk(and she’s hot). I think Monica is killing it in this role but I hate the male main SO much. Like I have fast forward his scenes. I don’t know much about the show and if he’s going to last or what but I want his character killed off. He is just SO vile and I feel like he’s only going to get worse.

Yeah, I don’t particularly like her yet as a person but I find her compelling and watchable and can feel her journey starting. Ray is…clearly horrible, too, but I’m just afraid the show’s gonna be like, they’re the same. 🙂 I don’t get why even when we have wlw leads they have to share screentime with men to this degree.

Hi, i’m the list requestor, and it was both kinda curiosity and for recs. 68 whisky is pretty good once you get a couple episodes in and what we do in the shadows is hilarious, also birds of prey is wonderful and I wish I hadn’t waited as long as I did to watch it.

Oh, then I wouldn’t go by the list of things I haven’t watched, heh. Unless it’s super recent, like the latest eps of things I haven’t gotten around to watching, usually it means I don’t like it that much. As with 68 Whiskey, unfortunately, I did watch a few eps, but I didn’t really love it. I DO love WWDITS, I’m just a bit behind on that one. And yeah, BoP, I know, I know. Maybe I’ll watch it now, thanks.

Harlivy anon again. Thank you for your replies! I can actually see what you mean about the build up, so I’m a bit less stressed now haha thank you. But yeah they’re one of my few main ships, and it’s been exhausting watching DC reap ‘progressive bonus points’ for them being a thing by virtue of PR, while actually having them be written like it was sweeps weeks in the 00’s

Yeah, no, I totally get it, that fear where you’ve wanted something for so long and now that it’s almost here, it’ll be ruined in the final steps. And ugh, I can imagine! I really hate when people get praise and the media holds them up when they’ve barely done anything. Sweeps weeks, lol, that’s actually such a good comparison. And I mean, I’m glad I and hopefully the other anon who I just answered were reassuring, but at the same time, keep your guard up. I’d hate to see you sucker punched, like, for me it’s one thing, but I don’t have these years of investment. Just hope for the best, reasonably, logically, I think you’re fine, but…you know.

Just going off the Harlivy anons and wanted to say I wouldn’t be too worried about Ivy! I think her behavior in this episode made sense for her, and it’s not that she isn’t actually in love with her best friend cause homegirl 100% is. But Ivy’s biggest fear is being abandoned, and opening herself up to emotional vulnerability I think is part of that. She already knows Harley means SO much to her, that’s she’s her “ride or die” (1/3)

so I’m sure the thought of having even deeper feelings terrified her which is why she was so quick to want to brush it off. I do think she loves Kite Man (though how she isn’t more annoyed by his occasional “bro-ness” I will always find ooc for her, I don’t see Ivy finding it nearly as endearing as the writers have decided and it does make me cringe a bit). But overall he is a nice, caring guy and deep down I think she knows he does love her more than she loves him. (2/3)

And to Ivy that is the safer option that she wants to cling onto right now, but she won’t be able to fight off her stronger feelings for Harley much longer. If anything I was just hoping they wouldn’t drag the love triangle for the whole rest of the season with a long cheating subplot, but alas that does seem to be what might happen. Also sorry for multiple asks but apparently I had long thoughts on this! (3/3)

Oh! That’s a really great point. Between the two of them, Ivy has so much solely invested in Harley. The show’s emphasized that again and again. In ep 9, when they fought over Harley joining the LOD:

And like, Ivy was right that the LOD sucked and they’d literally told her they were gonna reject Harley, but Harley getting accepted didn’t need to turn into this. 

And after Harley bailed on Ivy to go meet up with Joker, from ep 11:

Like, this was part of the whole season 1 finale arc, Ivy being upset at the mere idea of losing Harley.

And then as you said! From this week’s ep:

You’re so right. For someone who’s already so scared of losing Harley as a friend (and the fact that she sets herself up as the alternate to the Joker for Harley’s time and affections and doesn’t even realize), the emotional risk from being in a romantic relationship with all the additional volatility and chance for messiness that comes from it… It’s understandable, why she’d shy away from that.

As for the triangle, yeah, I’d been hoping this ep would be the start of some meaningful change, but they really are gonna drag this out, it looks like. I really wanted to see them together and how that’d affect them in this world we’ve already seen a season and a half of, their relationship with each other and other people except now as romantic partners. It’d be so different from what any other show’s done because they’re just so central, they drive all the plot, and any other time we’ve seen lead characters in f/f relationships that develop on the show, it’s either a very temporary thing over almost as soon as it begins or it happened in literally the series finale. Like, how is each wacky plot of the week gonna be affected by this major change, especially when we have their friendship to contrast it against?

ON the other hand. I do really, really love getting that payoff after an angsty slow burn, like with Atypical, or after the suspense and tension from Killjoys’ last season, and I feel like for this show, I can’t really think of any other way to slow things down and add that suspense aside from a third party? The cheating’s not necessary, of course, that’s on the writers, but like, without him there, there’d be no real reason they wouldn’t just talk this through earlier, there’s not the same societal pressure or homophobia you’d get in other stories. Yes, yes, the fear of being in love with your best friend, but like, Harley in yesterday’s ep would have 100% said something without him there, right. So as much as I hate him, I get his narrative value here and I don’t mind this being drawn out.

Could you post a list of the movies and shows that you plan on watching?

Oof, you don’t want to see that. it’s scattered in different places and would be pages long as just a comma-separated word list. I will say that anything I’m particularly interested in I usually do get around to watching soon after it’s mentioned. Not to say there aren’t surprises where I thought I wasn’t going to like something as much as I did but the longer it stays on the list, the more it gets pushed down, since I add to the beginning and when I watch take it off. Here’s the start of the one I use now, with the movies in bold and any TV show I have at least one ep left of:

I hope you’re right! Honestly i might just be old and jaded lol. I’ve been into this ship for ten years and it’s just been handled so horribly that i’ve come to expect the worst. But i really really want them to get it right this time. I love this version of harley. Ivy is a bit odd sometimes, i don’t really understand her this episode. I hope they spend more time exploring her emotions.

Damn, that’s a lot of investment! I’d be wary too, hell, I’m wary now. If you hadn’t brought it up, I wouldn’t even have thought that’s where they were going, but I guess there’s always a possibility. Some people might think it’s “more” progressive or just flat out more interesting/edgy/surprising, which, can’t rule out that these writers might want to go there. But–and I may look dumb in a few weeks–it seems odd to play it this way if the end goal is, wait, I can be with both people, like THAT’s the big realization here, you know?

Except for her inexplicable interest in Kite guy, I always see where Ivy’s coming from but in today’s ep I do agree, I expected a bit more introspection from her. But I can also see it as the show not wanting to write her and Harley with the same storyline and approach through this and if she actually stops and thinks about it, either the angst they’re having fun drawing out with Kite douche stops or they’ll make her look a lot worse cheating when she could just put a stop to it.
