I love Betty! It doesn’t seem to take itself so seriously and it reminds me of my friends, only we rollerskate instead of skateboarding. I also really like how calm it is despite everything like they tackle issues without it feeling like a lesson you know? And Honeybear is adorable, I totally get her little freakout with Ash.

Yeah! I was watching the latest ep and thinking I keep describing this as laid back and relaxed, but even aside from the sexism baked into the premise, skater girls dealing with how male-dominated skateboarding is, it’s covering metoo, sexuality, drug dealing, and oh, white people having it easier with cops than black people, heavy topics. I guess it’s just that the show makes it seem like they’ll all come through and survive, their bodies and futures and friendships intact.

And aww, that seems really chill, you and your friends. Enjoy it! :p

Oof, Honeybear. Immediately, even as I felt bad for Ash, I felt bad for Honeybear, that kind of freakout is never easy on the person having it, but I hope she’s able to deal with it, even if Ash herself is out of the picture.

pride mubarak

Oh, thank you! You too! Pride Mubarak! Wow, you know, I never really associate the two things, they’re always mutually exclusive, me on the edges of both, but yeah! Yeah! Pride Mubarak!

Ivy in the comics is less bored, chill, sarcastic and indifferent and more cold, calculated, sexy, intelligent and generally entirely misanthropic. There are a LOT of opportunities to read her as asexual/lesbian/both. I love how she detests humanity, not because of social awkwardness but for political and existential reasons. And that makes her devotion to harley very special.

Oh, hmm, hmm. I mean, I do get her hating people in general in the show, although from 2×06 it seems to stem from her parents and not social awkwardness? But still, I think I get what you’re saying. And that DOES make her Harley exception all the more unique.

The only other version of her I really know is Uma Thurman in that one movie and I barely remember it. THAT was definitely different from this one, but also seems to be different from what you’re describing. Maybe I should try some of these comics…

I was about to start watching vagrant queen but the comment about the violence put me off. I thought it would be a fun adventure show like killjoys, but I take it it’s not the case?

Oh, it is, it’s campy and goofy, more so than KJ maybe, and I guess that’s how I take the violence, but the other anon’s not wrong, every once in a while you’ll see people being tortured or hurting themselves and it’s just…there, not even that cartoonish, though it’s treated like it is, and then we just move on from that back to the jokes. It’s not particularly to my sense of humor, but it’s also not a dealbreaker for me.

Sorry didn’t mean for it to sound like I overly cared about Kite Man (though being cheated on does suck), but I moreso want that narrative because then he will also acknowledge he projected to kinda force this relationship cause he thought Ivy was “cool” and “out of his league” so he just tried to make his “dream girl” work even though they just don’t truly GET each other. Kinda like a 500 Days of Summer thing (though I will say I think Tom in that movie was a bigger douche canoe than Kite guy)

Oh, I didn’t think you were, I just grabbed that opportunity to get out some my frustration that’d been piling up. I’m usually ready to be guided by whatever narrative the writers are pushing EXCEPT when it comes to white Nice Guys. I feel like…they already get too much of a pass in general and that translates to laziness and complacency in writing them in media, their development and growth is so shallow compared to what other characters go through. And KM’s no exception. For example, I actually don’t mind Psycho, because he’s treated by the writing exactly as he is, this misogynistic POS, but every time I see people praising KM and talking about how nice he is, I’m like, where.

Although, I gotta say, the more the show’s like, he’s just there because Ivy’s too scared to choose Harley, the less I care either way about him. The way you think he might also have his own realization works for me, especially since they focused so much on how Harley gets Ivy while the ring he wanted so badly for her she didn’t even like. This might be the best way to get out of this wedding with none of the characters hurt too badly.
