Agreed, there was something THERE. It was that core relationship, deeper even within the wider circle of friends, framed as this historical one-that-gotta-away kinda trope that the whole current experience is there to fix, and then amends are made and a final overture to reach the happy ending they didn’t get before. I mean, we say “if they were a man and woman” all the time, but…yeah.
