Ohhh, you’re so luck you got to understand them! God, it was SO GOOD. And it took my dumbass so long to realize, “holding up (half) the sky” and the ship name, Atlas. LIKE THAT LEVEL OF THOUGHTFULNESS. And the fact that Mei did it knowing and expecting NOTHING, just continuing these lessons with no hope for ANYTHING, only just helping and respecting and loving Lu. ;_; Really, really need them to meet again and get a happy ending.
Omg Away is such a mess. Emma’s character was so badly written? And the husband and daughter plot was zzzzzz BUT THEN you have Misha and Lu, whose characters and stories were so good???
Haha, it is a bit not what I would have expected for a space show, especially after For All Mankind. It really searches out that personal drama first, before even space plot and action. But that’s also what gave us Lu/Mei so, you know. I didn’t mind Emma, tbh, just at certain points, the writing was…mhmm. I actually liked her husband a lot and his plot was interesting to me, but I do think they got the balance wrong of just how much we had to see of the daughter’s plot. We didn’t need that much. I’m curious to know what the general audience thought, because I feel like they’d have loved Emma and Matt but the daughter? Hmm.
Another “blink and you miss it” moment is when they’re in Sterling’s dads wood shop making their assignment, April actually bites her lip after looking at Sterling (you can kinda see it when when they do a close up shot of her face but its so fast you can barely catch it)
Oooh, this?

You must have rewatched a bunch, lol.
But it’s so interesting, right! Within the show and outside it, the interviews with Devon show that she at least is not necessarily playing this as something romantic, and yettttt. Like, on those rewatches, you can seeee this growing curiosity and interest on her side as well! In the big subtext ships like SC or Faberry where we can point out scenes from, say, Lena or Quinn where there’s some intense gazing and it just feels romantic, but apparently not intentionally, but then you have something like this where it’s still subtext at this stage except for an eventually reciprocated canon ship. Just fun to consider and contrast all these. 😮
Did another rewatch of Episode 8 of TBH and Sterling is absolutely adorable in that whole episode. The one thing I relate to the most with her is the panicked/worried expression she gives April when she says to her “You thought that was nothing?” She doesn’t relax or breath until April says no then you see her breath out like “thank God it wasn’t just me who felt something”
Ooof, yeah, that moment where she just stops breathing and just braces herself:

Because maybe it was, maybe she’s making too much of it and it meant nothing to April or she’s not going to acknowledge it but phew, April admits it wasn’t nothing and then we get this moment of relief.

It’s like those moments in fic where people let out a breath they didn’t know they were holding. 😛
just a random thought: i love blaire! she’s such a paradox haha
Lol, I do toooo. At first I was naturally drawn to Sterling, I’m such a rules-follower too, but Blair is such a good kid too. She wants to be a rebel and free-spirited but within certain rules. She’s still scandalized by smoking and wouldn’t have skipped school if not for Sterling suggesting it and has a definitive ranking of twin types and which is more impressive. She’s just a normal good kid. 🙂
Oh man that last ask.. yk blair’s mental health is definitely something I’ll keep my eye out for in season 2 (if renewed) because not only has she described herself as depressed but at times she’s also so impulsive and reckless that I really thought they were trying to hint at another MI possibly? I guess we’ll see, I do wonder what her plot line would look like in a new season since they’ve mostly left it open (unlike sterling who has the mom thing + april going on)
(The “last” ask referring to this one.)
Right, I might put some of that down to just being a teen, and contrasted against Sterling to be the more reckless, impulsive one and, well, it’s a TV show, they need to do reckless, impulsive things, but, on the other hand, they could as easily use what they’ve already written for plot.
When she and Sterling were apologizing to each other in ep 10 outside the yogurt shop, she straight up acknowledged Sterling might be right about her causing drama because she’d rather life feel bad because of her actions and not just life feeling bad, which is a HUGE alert. That’s too specific and real to just be glossed over as TV comedy, I think. I do feel that next season while Sterling’s caught up in everything, in the quieter moments for Blair we might see this unfolding.
April “i want to ravage you” Stevens and Sterling “You could do that” Wesley would be perfect for the jealous trope, IF they are together. it’s very in character, and something good enough to add an one-episode-drama when they become this solidified, happy couple.
(Sort of follow-up to this ask.)
You’re right, you’re right, if they’re already together and it’s not like, a punishment, but instead a way for them to like Process conflict and come out stronger, for sure. It would be very fun to see how these two handle that…or anything.
Hello there, I was wondering if you heard of the show Strangers on Facebook watch, it’s so well written and I think you would make the best gifs for it
And other anons:
Just watched Strangers from Facebook Watch (not on FB, bc fuck FB right lol) but anyways there’s a really great pairing in season 2- Isobel and Mari. Like chemistry through the roof, angst all of it. I’m wondering if you’ve seen it? I know there’s a certain plot, don’t wanna spoil it, can turn ppl away but it reminds of how a lot of ppl didn’t watch El Embarcadero bc of the dead husband storyline. idk just wanted to share and get your thoughts!
have you seen strangers? it’s a facebook watch show with 2 seasons that’s surprisingly clever and tender about a bisexual woman. she rents half her home as an air bnb while living there still and just trying to figure life out in her late 20s. it’s not really the typical millennial antics though, and she has a girlfriend each of the seasons, i binged it all last night(20 min eps) and i loved it.
I have seen it!
Honestly, my thing with giffing it is that it’s just TOOOO giffable. It’s got too many gay moments! Especially that second season, because yes, I dooo ship them. I wish we’d gotten just a little bit more at the very end to imply a fully happy ending, if we’re not gonna get another season, although I’m not sure I could bear another season of this kind of angst because there’s just no way they’d stay together…well, hmm, they could do a lot with that last big development… But yeah, still, I’m mostly happy with where we ended things.
El Embarcadero almost has an advantage, since the husband’s dead off the bat and the whole show is about these women and the connection they have, whatever its form. By the time we meet Mari in Strangers, we’re already in s2 and think we have some kind of idea of Isobel’s relationships, and personally, even as I was rooting for them the further we went because it seemed more and more genuine and sincere on Mari’s end, I was still sure it’d end in heartbreak and the next possible season would be a new person. I shipped them way more on rewatches, since I wasn’t ready to trust Mari and invest in them.
But see, the same problem with giffing I had with El Embarcadero, where I was like, okay, if it’s this many moments, I’m just gonna do every little thing, from the start, and then totally fizzled out when I got to the actual season with most of their romantic moments. I’ll continue with them and start Strangers too, I swear! But where even to start… Especially since there are so many moments not even related to the f/f I loved. Cam, the many, many cameos, that desi family! Where to start. 😡
why are you done with lovecraft country? too gore? ;/
Well, kinda, and some other things. Maybe the ask right after yours might help.
And another anon:
Lovecraft country really made Tic a whole ass war criminal. Executed a woman in cold blood. Had a gun to Ji-ah’s face and didn’t even remember it when he saw her days later. Tortured and killed her best friend. I hate this. The first three eps were So good then it all went to hell. They’re doing the same harmful tropes to indigenous and Asian characters that white narratives do. Think I’m done watching tbh.
I was saving this to try to arrange my thoughts but I should probably answer it before I forget them entirely.
I can’t disagree, all that was there and disappointing, in addition to the handling of queerness and WOC three eps in a row, but to me that all’s a symptom of why I don’t want to watch: it’s far more about themes and messages and the plot for that particular ep than it is about the characters organically playing out a story. And that’s just not for me. In the first three eps I thought I could tolerate the distance but apparently it also means this real disregard for the characters.
It wasn’t even this ep after which I thought that, it might have been 4 or 5, I remember being kind of puzzled and telling my friend, we know less and less about these characters, this far more a characters serving the plot than the plot serving the characters kind of show. But I still watched. And the gore and body horror was a LOT but I still watched after 5. But then 6 gave me the same unpleasant feeling I got watching The Terror s2, where it’s like, we’re already in a damn war, and only now focus on these people already suffering so much, this is the only context you wanna tell this story in? I ended up pausing the ep and looking up comments to see what happened and was like, I don’t even know why I’m watching this. I don’t know or really like these characters, however much I like the actors. I hear the next ep is big for Aunjanue Ellis so I might come back for it, and to see the aftermath of the William/Christina reveal, if we get one.
