they’re making a Hanna show?!? will it have precious young wlws, is that why I’m seein it on your blog? although idk i feel like cate and Saoirse were what made it so great

Oh, I don’t know if it will be f/f, 2% of the things I post are not. Mireille is pretty great and she’s playing Marissa kind of differently from how Cate did but Saoirse really made it and yeah, watching the first ep mostly just made me want to rewatch the movie (which I then did).

I dunno if they’ll expand on the Hanna/Sophie or not, but the first ep had Hanna stumble on some teen boy out in the wilderness and they became friendly so.

So the second time Juliana and val see each other you can see that Juliana’s has decided to stay away from Valentina since they’re so different and yet that lasted seconds, do you think juls has the will to stay away from Valentina?

Noooope. Lol.

I like that you mentioned that second meeting, how after realizing that the pretty, sad girl she lowered her guard for was actually one of the mega-rich she was like, oh, that’s over, because she was noticeably aloof when Val popped up again. But of course Val got through to her because she’s very persuasive. 😛

The thing is, this time Juls is staying away not for her own self-preservation but because of Val. And that’s going to make it a lot harder for her to give in.

Some people act like Juls is some immutable all-knowing character whose inconsistent behavior is a sign of moral failings and not simply a person reacting to new stimuli. She’s learning and experiencing so many things and yes, they’re affecting her. Val’s in a similar position, but not the same.

The way the story was set up, it had to go like this. Val could never have been the one to break up, not when people have spent the whole of their relationship telling both of them Juls wasn’t good enough for Val. Not rich enough, not safe enough, not male enough (there isn’t even a single person on Juls’s side who knows who could make the same argument). If Val had made that decision, the blow to their relationship and to Juls would have been catastrophic. Only one of them is seen as selfish–by herself even–for pursuing the relationship and it’s not Val.

From that second meeting onward, Juls has spent every stage of their relationship, friendship or more, feeling like not enough and ready to bail. When she’s with Val and voices those concerns, on her own behalf, Val addresses them and it works. But even Val can’t argue her out of them when it’s for Val’s own sake.

It’s not going to be a matter of can Juls stay away from Val, it’s how much will everything around them let them be together and how much can Juls grow to accept she deserves a chance to be with Val.

Hey I have a very important question! That night when Val couldn’t sleep and Juls told her a story on the phone about when she was a kid? She said her dad was super sweet with her and all. Since she lied about him being an electrician too I was wondering what you thought about that story since I don’t think “El Chino” would be that kinda guy. It’s been bugging me to know if she made that story up just for Val or not

And another ask:

Do you think the story Juls told Val when they were on the phone and Val couldn’t sleep was true? About the best day ever with her dad? Bc I can’t imagine Chino el sicario doing that. But then we see Chino in Beltran’s body playing with Beltran’s son and i wonder…

My original reaction was to believe her, that it was in fact one of the only sweet moments in her life with a man she did not have many with and remembered for that reason alone, but I’m a gullible dumbass so I don’t really know.

We know Chino sucks but is capable of some acts of decency.

On the one hand, I’m like, she could have just told any number of true stories with Lupe, if she was going to make up something, wouldn’t it be better? But on the other, maybe she doesn’t have many better stories with Lupe or didn’t want to give up anything too personal.

Either way, it’s sad as hell. One of the many plots coming up has to be Juls finding out who Beltran is and talking things through with him, maybe we’ll see more details of her childhood.

juliana/valentina are not only more important than guille/renata but they are years ahead in being better and having depth. I mean Guille started out being the perfect spoiled rich guy that was rude to Renata at all times til the moment she helped him solve a problem he got involved in cause he was that rich guy who wanted to see the world in a different way for a moment. As of now Guille/Renata “angst” is just so lacking

Hey, fighting over a cat is real angst! But you know what? Lesbians would never do that, so I rescind the comparison.

And another anon:

I was reading some yt comments on juliantina stories, and apparently the straights are rooting for them. The show is making the viewers to support their relationship and actually root for them. Like a girl was watching with her family and when they have their first kiss her father said finally. Cute right?

Awwww, so cute. I don’t know how any person who isn’t garbage can watch this telenovela–so already coming in with the mindset to invest in these stories and empathize with these characters–and not love them completely. If you put together all the ingredients to make a rootable f/f ship, they tick every box. Both fundamentally very decent people, a classic rich/poor trope, self-sacrifice, a bigger external enemy, genuine fondness and affection between them where you can see they like each other, the chemistry and yearning to show they want each other.

bro… i’m from Mexico and i never imagined i’d be out here actually WANTING to watch a telenovela like i always looked down on them bc they can be terrible but right now? we stan

Aww, yeah, it does change things when you can not only see how good something is but kind of get that validation from an external audience that, objectively, this is really good! It happened to me too with the Pakistani dramas Humsafar and Zindagi Gulzair Hai, where suddenly your perspective is changed because, in this case, they were really well received in India.

Maybe we’ll be more appreciative of our local media now. 🙂

So is it just me or juliantina has a much more important role in the plot than guille and Renata? I don’t watch the whole show so I’m wondering if its just me or smth

No, you’re right. Their plot is what the f/f couple would usually get, it’s pretty separate from everything else. If you took Renata out of the show, nothing would really change. It’s a cute romance for Guille and a way to cause friction between him and Eva but she’s not doing anything plot-wise.

Juliantina is one of the most central aspects of the show, you need them as an actual plot device to reveal the body-switching and the connection between the cartels.

@dealanexmachina pointed out to me that Guille/Renata might actually be another way to appeal to the audiences for Juliantina, to parallel the rich/poor trope viewers are already used to seeing and to have them to compare directly. If you’re going to root for the m/f couple then you should root for the f/f couple too. Juliantina are paralleled both by Guille/Renata as well as Lucia/Jacobo (Leon), where Lucia and Juls are from the wrong side of the tracks and brings complications to the relationship while Leon/Val are still besotted and willing to do anything for them.

May I ask which moment do you like to see Juls in the most? I think that she has the prettiest smile ever

If you’d asked me this before the latest episode (which–you did, this is from days ago, I’m so sorry about the late reply), it would have been an eaaaasy win for happy smiling Juls.

What can I say, I love her in that denim jacket, the ponytail, and the added accessory of a Val tucked under her chin.

But furious, protective Juls!

It’s tough…but no, happy Juls wins always.
