Anon who watches and talks about Juliantina with her Mom here!! My Mom told me something that I did not know after we watched Lupe’s reaction to Juliantina. When I came out to her, about a year ago, she was confused but all she said was okay as long as I’m happy she is happy because that’s all she wanted but in our culture it’s not easy to accept and I was shocked that it was so easy with her. What I didn’t know was she went through a whole thing with our extended family and literally…

…purge all the ones that she knew would say or do something to shame me for it. I was wondering why we didn’t go to this and that’s person children’s birthdays and now I just want to cry. She felt even more strongly after watching that scene because as a mother you need to protect your child and not to be the one hurting them. If it’s something you don’t understand, than you need to learn from them. She know wants to adopt Juliantina and I don’t know how I can deserve such a Mother???

Oh wow, that makes me want to cry! I love your mom, that’s such a kind thing of her to do. Mine, at least, and so many others, are so image-conscious and try to bend their kids to fight society’s expectations, while your mom took steps to keep you safe. That’s really, really great, and you’re so lucky.

What could make juls drink? I’m been thinking about that a lot. Is HC obviously she’s not going to do it

Well, I don’t think anything? She literally doesn’t like the smell or taste, what comfort would she find in it? 

I know people have floated theories that maybe she associates it with Chino and his behavior and perhaps even other trauma, which then presumes she keeps away from it more for fear of its effect than any actual dislike toward it, but she literally makes a face when it’s given to her. 

She’s not one to give in to peer pressure and not even Val at her most winsome could persuade her to try, so I don’t know how she could even acquire the taste and get over the initial revulsion.

I actually don’t really see this as one of those situations. Val has already said sex with guys didn’t do much for her, she’s said that she’s never felt the same way with a boy, she didn’t even believe in love before. I don’t think anything about the writing is saying Juls is the exception to her otherwise only liking men.

What is a possibility is her only liking Juls out of…any human, that is the trope these storylines fall into more often, where once someone realizes they’re in love with a woman, they’re still only about that one woman. But even that, the whole “do you like girls?” “No. I like Juliana” and “I like women, actually, no, I like one woman, I like Juliana” thing is more to sell the drama and the romance. That long pause after she says the “No” to Eva’s question was to make us think, oh, is she going to deny her feelings? BAM, no, she’s gonna say it’s only Juliana, all romantic-style.

She could be bi or gay, still, and they might leave it vague, it doesn’t matter to the story what she defines herself as, Juls is her soulmate.
