Big fat Terminator Spoiler to follow –

Thanks for the separate warning post, anon, when I looked at the inbox this was the first ask I automatically saw so I had a chance to decide if I wanted to read the spoiler.

Which I did. Ah-hah, I see now. Got it! Honestly, I think we were all kind of deciding it wasn’t going to be anything like that anyway or that we’d just not think about it unless it was the case, so I’m just gonna go full speed ahead on the ship……yeah, we still have no name for them, lol.

Update: Delle seyah and Dutch kissed and I love them. But now Delle seyah murdered pawter in cold blood and I hate her??? She is actually like full out evil??? She’s definitely a character I’d abhor at this point in time and I’m not sure if she actually ever is redeemed or just keeps being an evil murder queen whose intentions eventually line up w Dutch & co’s… but I’m shocked that she got a happy ending after this evil shit lol. Like wow. Way for the writers to break byg all things considered

Yeahhh. So you’ve arrived there. Yeah, she’s FULL evil. I totally understand what you mean about hating her, I very predictably tend to go for the nice, boring, responsible good characters, always. Superman, Cap, Amy Santiago, hell, Elizabeth was my favorite Wakefield twin! I was never the type of person who’d be like, oh, these queer-coded villains are my thing.

But I don’t know why, Delle Seyah somehow is my Exception. I’ve actually wondered about this for a while, what makes her different. It’s not because she’s queer or a WOC, that doesn’t sway me automatically. I’ve been discussing it with a like-minded friend and we have some theories:

First, I’m still easily led by the narrative, I’ll go where it wants me to. And it’s the show that seems to still like her. Dutch, the lead, never stopped being my actual fave and if Delle Seyah had seriously gone against her, I’d side with Dutch, but the show doesn’t ever really make me choose. Yeah, season 3 has a whole building war with them on opposite sides but the fact that they give us that much of Delle Seyah’s point of view and sympathetically, that’s not trying to get us to hate her.

Secondly, Delle Seyah’s actions are shown to be exactly as bad and hurtful as they are. She’s set up in contrast to the good guy leads who care about feelings and not hurting people and the greater good and helping strangers and all that. In a setting like this, I need that. OUAT always had a lot of trouble with this, they wanted the cartoon villain with no nuance and then also a sob story to justify them but ended up being so messy. A lot of other media does that too, like The 100 with that massacre in mid-season 3. In an effort to shock the audience with atrocities and then continue without dealing with the fallout, they minimize what happened. But we know what Delle Seyah did was bad and Johnny continues to remember it, as he should! Even when she’s included with the others because of aligned motives, we never forget who and what she is.

And then, you have to remember, watching this in real time, we had years to process all this. The wait between season 2 and 3, 10 months. And we never thought she’d survive. You’re watching now knowing she got her happy ending, imagine thinking at any point for three seasons that she could die. Possibly more likelihood of a death near the season finale because of how TV works, but you know how it is with f/f characters, and a villainous QWOC at that? Surviving every ep was a victory. We never thought she was getting away with anything in the long run.

And lastly, nobody on the show is perfect. Everyone’s done crappy things. It’s far more about trying to do better and be better and that’s kind of…enough? There’s no line crossed that people can’t come back from. People don’t have to suffer the same amount of pain they caused to continue to exist freely and do better from now on.

It’s not redemption through punishment.

It’s a little hard to talk about more than three seasons’ worth of plot without spoiling too much, but she does go through her growth. To the point of being an actual good person, well, not really. There is some suffering in there, she does go through some things, but nothing that’d make up for full on murdering a character. She just begins to care about more than herself. And that seems to be enough. The people who die in this show don’t do so because they deserved it, it isn’t to redeem themselves. As long as you’re alive you can do better and once the other characters are okay with that, we are too.

Omggg Dutch categorizing their relationship as “hate flirting.” TBH the writers haaaaad to do Delle seyah/aneela Bc this shit is BLATANT & I for one woulda been pissed if I’d been an ongoing viewer and they kept teasing me like this w no follow thru lol. Delle seyah on the verge of passing out & Dutch telling her not to fantasize about this later Bc she was half carrying her omfg they’re cute I hate that I ship this lol

Oh, THAT ep. Oof, yep, they have a few eps that are extra shippy and that was the final one. And probably the most explicitly so.

For real, it was getting to be on the verge of genuinely promising something. Obviously many shows have gone farther and then ultimately done less, but I guess they were just like, why not? I might be misremembering, but I think I read that Aneela was always planned (it was Delle Seyah who stayed longer than intended by being that watchable), so they just decided to take advantage of their chemistry and put them together in at least this form?

Which was super weird because Aneela is SO MUCH not Dutch. Dutch has a sense of humor, warmth, she’s savvy. Aneela…might have a sense of humor and be savvy, heh, but not like Dutch. I joked with my friend that Aneela is Helena to Duch’s Sarah Manning but she’s also…Rachel? Though maybe their massive differences made it easier to accept the substitution?

I just deleted a bunch of stuff that was probably unnecessarily spoilery, even though I assume you know the gist of the following seasons. Let me know how the watching goes!

I started watching KJ and can I just say asdfghjkl I’m glad I know Aneela/Delle Seyah happens Bc I’m out here lowkey shipping delle seyah and Dutch rn lol. “I snap, you come” “you must be one hell of a snapper then” I mean cmooooon Kendry sounds almost as thirsty as Root was circa meeting Shaw. And Dutch is teasing her back I mean what is thiiiiis. So glad I know about aneela lol

Lowkey?? I was heavily shipping them, anon! Didn’t really think it’d happen, obviously, but it was so overt! It wasn’t the same as most other f/f subtext ships. As you said, it was a lot like Root’s interest in Shaw, flirting so heavily any time they met while Shaw/Dutch would roll their eyes but not be TOTALLY averse and then we know what happened there.

And, and, I liked them as people together, it wasn’t just shipping any ole two hot ladies who interacted, Delle Seyah seemed genuinely intrigued by Dutch’s different sides, they matched so well against each other, actually being on each other’s level.

When Aneela/Delle Seyah started, I was NOT a fan! I was like, who is this usurper? They think they can just throw in some lookalike and we’ll forget about Delle Seyah/Dutch? That’s not gonna happen! But man, Aneela is NOT a replacement? I don’t know what she is, how you could define her or that archetype, she’s just so much her own person and interesting in her way. And the way she and Delle Seyah connected was so fitting.

But yeah, I have thought about that, how weird it must be for you all to know to not get attached to Delle Seyah/Dutch as you start. I think it’s better that way? But the alternative was still pretty fun. :>

It’s me again, the kill Joys anon. I really did want to like it and tried once again, this time with s3 but I guess you’re right. Maybe it just isn’t my taste. Why do I feel like I’m somehow disappointing you by saying that? Lol…I’ve liked the other stuff I’ve seen on your tumblr tho and will probably like lots more that you’re bound to recommend

Heh, anon, no worries. It’s just a show. I like a lot of things more than I should and like a lot of them less than they deserve. I’m disappointed for you, if anything, it was a thing I enjoyed, I hoped you would be able to feel the same things I did, you didn’t, well, always more shows on the horizon.

It’s kind of funny, after seeing the big scifi trailers drop earlier, Killjoys is like a little baby compared to The Expanse and Trek. Maybe you’ll like them.

Your other Killjoys anon could try this Green Queens compilation from s3. youtube kRtmquwMeuQ

Thanks, anon, that’s also definitely a suggestion!

Wow, 84 minutes of content in a 10 ep season. God, it just reminds me, season 3 really was so good with everything, the music, the epic scale of everything, tying things into religion and politics, balancing so many elements, weaving that dreamy, fairytale thread through everything. It really leveled up. If you want, you can watch just this, Aneela’s tied into so much you’ll get a lot of the background and worldbuilding just from her story.

Want to make a recommendation on an overall great show that has a couple lesbian storylines. It’s on Netflix and it’s called Vis A Vis. It’s ridiculously good.

Oh, thanks, anon! That was on my radar a while back, before it was picked up by any English-speaking networks, but I lost track of it eventually. I even giffed something from it, a super cute scene which seemed the high point of the show and it could only go downhill from there, lol.

But yeah, now that it’s on Netflix, I may try it again.

@isagrimorie
replied to your post “Hi, I’ve been following you for quite some time and you always…”

my turning point episode for me was episode 4, because of the world building & political back and forth between Dutch and Delle Seyah. and then the last few episodes sealed Killjoys for me

Yeah, but this anon specifically mentions ep 4, which was Delle Seyah’s intro. It was the surrogate ep, so a lot of the Qreshi politics were at play. I feel like if you’re not at least intrigued by then…

@aflawedfashion replied to your post “Hi, I’ve been following you for quite some time and you always…”

I felt similarly. I actually gave up after episode five in season 1, but I’m glad I came back a few years later and gave it another shot. I just skipped straight to season 3 (the latest season at the time) and that’s when I got hooked on it, but I did get to season 2 eventually, and I did enjoy it more than season 1.

Oh, well, anon, see, more testimonials for s3! The reason I’m hesitant to immediately tell people to start there is because it’s partly so good because it’s built on the dynamics and characters we’ve known for two seasons already. But it did feel more mature and deeper by then too. I think you’d be okay with starting from there and going back if you wanted more.
