Thoughts on the last episode for For All Mankind?

I….did not care for it. I thought it went way too grim. For not enough payoff. To see the lone American man on the moon under emotional duress? Or the drama of keeping a secret like this from someone on the moon? The plot points and characters and character traits it explored and developed were just not enough to go there.

I’d even have accepted like…if it cost Tracy her place in the program, staying with Karen. Not that I’d have wanted that, but at least it’d be something where a woman was being punished for what women are expected to do, support each other in times like this, even though it’s something all decent humans should be doing and women disproportionately carrying the burden of. So it’d be a particular consequence of this alt timeline where she’s in a job like that but still facing a woman’s responsibilities. Just anything that would be unique to the situation the show has set up or even relevant to that era, either one, but it was just a very specific one-off situation that might have happened even now, right, an astronaut and their family separated as something terrible happens at home.

I even expected the Russians to come and meet him face to face, THAT would also be something worth all this, that this man alone has just lost his son. Maybe it’ll be in the next ep. Or we’re gonna see a drunk on the moon. I don’t know. But no, I didn’t care for it. I know that it seems like I’m only against f/f deaths, but I’m against a lot of deaths and deep traumas that don’t do much. Will this make Ed leave the program? Will he be dealing with it for the rest of his time on the show, as he should? I guess I’ll have to reserve judgment to see if the payoff comes after this.

The theories that have been flying around ????????????????

I’m sorry! I didn’t even do it on purpose at first but then I noticed and was like, I’m gonna leave that in. I didn’t even know about it till finally after last week, seeing Dom in the promo, I was like, awesome, okay, so she is alive, but what are their chances, what do other people think is gonna happen? And then I’m like, the what theory? It’s been around for how long??? Oh, man. But just 9 hours left now.

Grace tried so hard to save Carl ;_;

She did! I really loved that shot of the two of them working together. Freaking Arnold Schwarzenegger, the epitome of muscles and machismo, and then this comparatively incredibly wiry woman, both against a terminator. Despite her goal and priority being Dani’s safety, she did try to help those around them as much as she could, bursting in to help Diego earlier in the factory fight

I wish they’d delved more into the contrasts and similarities between her and a reprogrammed robot, the empathy they have for other beings vs seeing them and even themselves as tools. In the end they both seemed to truly care for the others and the mission and sacrificed themselves. :/

I hope they do make the Dex and liz moment about gray because dude just got cheated on and it involved someone who he was supposed to trust. Dick move on dexs behalf and I hope he never forgives her. Even though we know they’re gonna get together by the end of the show

I’m just not a fan of how much the show has been about him, tbh. His crime background has been the most boring part of the show to me and to make even this about him too? Of course it was terrible of Dex (and Liz) but to center this on him, for the writers to write this just to focus even more on him and what a good guy he is? I’m fine with this being about what a self-destructive person Dex is, because she is the actual lead of the show. What I mean is, she did a bad thing, but it should be about her hurting him and not him being hurt, if you get what I mean. Why’d she do it? If they say she did it to destroy Grey and Liz’s relationship because of her feelings for Grey, it’s just so…predictable.

Because frankly I do want to see more about her and women and not like this where it’s about a guy.

If it even happened. It was obviously my first assumption, but thinking on it, and rewatching the preview, where they never actually confirm it, I wonder if they’ll back away from it. Would be such a cop-out, I’d love to see them toss this huge spanner into the middle of the established dynamics. It’s horrible to the characters that it happened, but it’s interesting TV. Even more so if Liz was a regular.

Just thinking about how Grace can probably hear Dani’s heartbeat.

Ohhhh. You’re right! She can absolutely hear something like that. Oh man, the implications… I hope and assume fic makes use of that. Like, she’d be absolutely familiar with the spikes of fear and I bet she’s probably impressed when Dani gets her panic under control to take over a situation and lead, but in other situations… >_>

For All Mankind really said that the heiress, aeronautical engineer, pilot, and astronaut was gonna be a lesbian named Ellen Waverly. And that she was gonna be played by the beautiful Jodi Balfour.

Haha, right, the Mrs. Bennet part of me that’s still like HOW many pounds a year? was all swooning at that whole buildup. That FBI agent should write her bio. “First of all, your mom is from New York old money. Then your dad makes a ton of more money. A pilot as a teen, MIT, aeronautical engineer, astronaut. You have the pedigree, the money, the brains, the looks. So why do you, literal perfect woman, want to be with…a gay?” And she’s ours. :>

I actually wish we’d see some of her home life, actually. Are her parents supportive? Proud? What about pressure to marry? Did she work harder on a career so she’d have an excuse and an alternative to romance? But I feel like the more of THAT we find out, it’s because it’s going to hurt even more than what we’re already seeing.

I finished my rewatch but ended up fastforwarding a lot of sergio Bc I really cannot stand him lol. Maybe I’ll have to go back w more patience at some point. It WAS a total gutpunch when it happened back then, i remember everyone was attacking the person who spoiled it on twitter Bc no one thought the show would go that route after how good it’d been, but I’m glad I listened to that person Bc it happened! My rewatch reaffirmed that it was such a stupid choice at that point in the narrative 1/2

Like???? Val had made it thru everything without backsliding to Lucho. Juliana had not felt the need to experiment w sergio when she realized she was falling for Val. Neither gay panicked after they had sex. Juliana stuck up to Lupe AND moved out Bc she wouldn’t deny her love for Valentina. And after aLL THAT I’m supposed to believe she went & fucked sergio?? Nah. Unnecessary. Esp disgusting that it was sergio, who treated Juliana like shit & was stalkery. Also was childhood “friends” w Val 2/2

Yeah, I didn’t want to believe it but it seemed too obvious from what was being set up, sadly. And once the screenshots were up, well.

At the time, I was hoping they’d pull out something…educational, at least? But like, they didn’t even use it to cause enough drama for the relationship? Maybe that’s also because the show packed so much into the last quarter, everything happening at once, nothing really being dealt with at length, which I hear is a thing in the genre.

But you know, for me, it’s such a long time ago, I’ve just put it all aside and focused on everything else. It wasn’t nearly enough to ruin the ship or experience for me. It’s weird how small a thing it was in the show, like, yes, for us it was huge and impossible to ignore, but to the characters, the way they all handled it, it was practically forgotten by everyone in the space of days. I mean, yes, a kidnapping and the violent death of a fellow 20ish-year-old is enough to make you shift perspective, but that’s kind of the point too, right, the show had all that going on and just added this. I dunno. It’s not something I dwell on but it was definitely my least favorite part of their story.
