So I decided to watch the new l word against my better judgment (Bc I actually really hated og tlw except for Carmen whom I loved) but it’s actually not as terrible as I thought it’d be. It’s bad in that there’s all the same predictable cheating plots and there’s still racism going on, but it’s way more diverse than the original l word & the POC aren’t walking stereotypes which is nice. Tbh it’d be better if they just launched it without Bette/Shane/Alice & focused on the new ppl/no cheating.

Idk why they’d keep that trio of original characters with the plots they’ve had them undergo in the meantime tho. I imagine it’s annoying to see them rehash same plots 10+ Yrs later, whether or not u liked them, esp wrt bette’s entire life falling apart. It def makes me feel old af tho Bc a character that was a baby is now 16yo & even tho I never watched tlw til it was on Netflix it’s crazy to think about how long it’s been lol. Sorry for random info u watch a lot of les tv so sharing it lol

Lol, I do watch a lot of les TV, so no worries.

But, no Bette/Shane/Alice and no cheating? I think if you do that, you may as well just ask for a new show completely, because isn’t that half of what it is? It’s actually interesting seeing so many really different reactions, running from “I don’t like the new characters” to “I only like the new characters”, I guess that means it’s doing what it set out to do, but one thing I have gotten from both versions is that this show is about Drama. And of course time has passed, so much, you’re not wrong there, but people are still attached to the original cast. There’s been some growth since, some regression, some stagnation, and that’s just people, right. As fictional characters, maybe there’s a familiarity and even comfort in watching them go through similar things as before. I would definitely get irritated at never seeing them progress enough to “win”, but I think that’s just a feature of these shows, and they’ve done all right, all things considered. I just don’t think either of those elements are going anywhere, if you want to keep watching the show.

I’m honestly so happy for Ashlyn and Ali!! I remember years and years ago when everyone on tumblr was speculating that they were secretly in love and/or dating, then watching all the progression of them coming out/it being true, getting engaged, now married! What a ride. I’m so happy for them!

I’ve always been on the periphery of woso so I just checked in every few years but I remember how they had fans who were like, they’re together, and other people were like, stop being delusional. And then it became like an open secret. And it was also they themselves who kind of put the kibosh on speculation, right? But now look at them! Honestly goals, in so many ways. 😛

you don’t have to publish this but for the record there’s been rumours about Atypical having ties to Autism Speaks since the beginning but the official Atypical Twitter directly responded to someone in 2017 saying that they did not consult with Autism Speaks for the show. the tweet is still viewable, and was recently retweeted by someone i follow which is why i was reminded of it. so there’s that to also add to the mix i guess.

Well, I’d hoped that by the time I got to this batch of asks I’d have cycled back around to giffing more Atypical but I’m not even close. I’ll just answer them anyway. 😮

Okay, despite how quickly I published the first ask about them, I didn’t really see any urgency in posting this because while it does clarify this one thing, that they’re not funded by nor did they consult with Autism Speaks as of 2017, they’re still heartily endorsed by them and there’s still criticism of their rep.

But it is worth at least correcting that point:

Yesssss and it really did happen!!! (Even tho there was no kiss Bc apparently that’s reserved for dead gays or perhaps future season. they are gfs there’s no other explanation for it.) Every little moment bt them was great, whiiiich it’d have to be Bc they barely put them onscreen. Idk why I’m such a sucker for “imma fuck with u and irritate tf outta u til it really counts and then I’ll fight for u til the death” but here i am collecting these couples over n over again lol. (1/2)

The Claudia thing irritated me. The show has some issues w slaughtering the women/POC characters so I was annoyed they chose to make Claudia evil-evil when she’s one of two main female characters (Amaya would be a third but she disappears a lot). Along w the whole dead gays reveals which suck. I see a lot of ppl celebrating gay kisses on twitter but. I don’t get it. They’re dead. After a kiss. It’s the worst of tropes. And I wanted more Aanya after she was the only ruler to see thru viren (2/3)

But overall I really enjoy the show. It’s definitely one of those shows that’s great but could be Epically Excellent if they’d just focus more on their queer and POC characters lol. The pacing of this season was a little weird, with everything happening all at once at the end. I get wanting Aanya to be Rescue Brigade but I wish we’d seen more of those characters. So much happened offscreen after so much time spent getting Zym back to the spire. Amaya/Janai tho so it’s all good lol I need more

Oh, I’m hoping for and EXPECTING a kiss in the next season. That handhold was NOT them getting together, surely! I want to SEE that, in front of me. I want to see actual, like, confessions and realizations and lighter moments turning serious because it’s real. Not just allusions and jokes.

Is Runaan like, dead dead? Isn’t there a chance of him coming back? If there is, maybe that’s partly why people are excited, aside from just seeing something go canon. But yeah, him and Aanya’s moms, not a great track record. Which is why they have to fix it with Amaya and Janai? And one of those ways is definitely by including more of them. I did really love them but I have to agree, they could have had a lot more. When I look at the other ships I really loved this year, it’s not just screentime, what I loved is a certain focus and centering, where you could see the time and effort and thought the writers put into them. These two still feel a bit sidelined.

“imma fuck with u and irritate tf outta u til it really counts and then I’ll fight for u til the death” is a great ship dynamic! When a character can get under someone’s skin and wants to for some reason (>_>) but there’s a deeper respect and even affection? *chef’s kiss*

The show’s issues with women…………. I mean. Well, it’s hard for people’s real sensibilities to not affect their work.

I’m in the same place with the show, it could be really great, at a level it isn’t reaching for me currently. An increased focus on their queer and POC and just better treatment of women would do wonders, and agreed on not keeping important things offscreen or rushing them just because they want a surprise. But maybe I’m also just saying that as a fan of Amaya and Janai and wanting more of them, heh.

Gosh, I took so long to reply to this and it’s not exactly a glowing positive reflection of the show, but I do want to reiterate that I am extremely happy with them pursuing Janai and Amaya as a romantic ship! 🙂

Yo that last episode of For all mankind was incredible! Ellen x Pam = ? but it’s so good that we get a wlw couple at the front of an episode like this. Karen and Pam bonding was unexpected but so welcome. So glad we’re getting a second season!

It was such a nice surprise. I fully expected much of the ep to be about rescuing Ellen and Deke and hoped that would mean some moments with a concerned Pam watching from the bar, but I did not know we would get this bounty. To make almost the whole ep about them as people and their relationship, the extra length season finale!

I can’t remember if I’ve said this before, but I’ll say it again: I’m coming to a point, because I guess we’re getting the rep to finally support it, where it’s so valuable to me to see us take up real space (no pun intended) in stories meant for everyone. A lot of my big ships this year were from shows where the characters were central, where their story was important. Juliantina, Atypical, Killjoys (perhaps less so this season but the finale paid off in spades), Domlene, For All Mankind. Oh, and a special mention for Runaways that took a decade and a half old fanon ship and made them one of the core plot points of their entire show. We’re so used to having to read into things that aren’t really there, with subtext ships, and then “graduating” to canon ships with side characters that barely get any screentime, it’s like Disney movie rep, something that could easily be cut out and not make a difference. But when our stories are so important that they can’t be cut out, when everyone has to focus on us. Us! Imagine trying to watch that For All Mankind finale with all references to Ellen and Pam’s relationship cut out.

It’s kind of funny that we actually saw Pam before Ellen, an established presence from early on. I genuinely can’t picture where we’re supposed to see her in nine years for season 2, but I also can’t imagine that they’ve written her out. I’m really glad they gave her that friendship with Karen, both as a way to bring her into the viewing room and create another central dynamic, but also because Karen needed that too. I hope we see that next season too, a friendship of Wayne, Karen, and Pam, the unconventional astronaut significant other trio.
